Deep into stoppage time of a hard-fought contest, Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev issued a yellow card to the 24-year-old France playmaker following an altercation with Paraguay midfielder Matías Galarza.
The Bayern Munich winger had put his finger to his lips before Galarza fell to the ground, appearing to claim he had been struck in the face by the French international, prompting the referee to caution Olise.
If the disciplinary decision stands, another yellow card in Thursday’s quarterfinal against Morocco in Foxborough, near Boston, would rule Olise out of a potential semifinal should France progress.
Bradley Barcola and Manu Koné also face the risk of suspension. Both received yellow cards against Paraguay and would miss a potential semifinal if they pick up another against the Atlas Lions.
