World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open (August 30-September 13), the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year, due to a right knee injury, he announced in a statement on Friday.
“Even though I have worked hard with my team and medical staff, we had to make a difficult decision: I will not be able to play at the US Open this year,” said the Italian, who has not competed since winning Wimbledon on July 12.
“I returned to the courts in Monte Carlo in recent days and we realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee problem. I am obviously very sad and disappointed, because New York has a special place in my heart,” Sinner said. He reached the final of the New York tournament last year.
“The plan now is to stay in Europe and continue my recovery with the medical and performance teams, with the aim of being ready for the Asian swing and the tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai,” he added. The two tournaments are scheduled for late September and early October, respectively.
Sinner, 24, has dominated the 2026 season with an impressive record of 44 wins and three losses, and six titles, including Wimbledon. But he suffered a major disappointment at the French Open, where he arrived as the overwhelming favorite before losing in the second round after suffering heatstroke.
On Thursday, his main rival, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, announced that he would return to competition at the US Open after more than four months out with a wrist injury.
