French striker Kylian Mbappé, who scored both goals in Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Sunday’s La Liga El Clásico, said reaching the 100-goal mark for the Spanish giants was “just a detail.”
“I’m very happy. I think everyone already knows that I love scoring goals and helping the team in that way, but I think this is just a detail. The most important thing is the team’s victory, and I think it will give us a lot of confidence as a group,” Mbappé told Real Madrid TV.
The French captain’s brace, which brought his tally in a Real Madrid shirt to 99 and then 100 goals, handed Barcelona their first La Liga defeat of the season after nine consecutive wins and reignited the title race. Real Madrid are now just three points behind the Catalan leaders, who have 27 points to their rivals’ 24.
Mbappé also moved to 11 goals in La Liga this season, two behind leading scorer Raphinha of Brazil, who scored Barcelona’s only goal in El Clásico.
“Honestly, the real star tonight was the team because we knew we had to put in a big performance, a game we had to approach like men. Today’s win sends a good message, but we cannot think the season is over. Next week, against (Racing) Santander on their home ground, we have to show the same intensity,” the 27-year-old striker said.
After two seasons without major trophies, Mbappé also stressed that if Real Madrid are to win silverware this season, the players must “do it together, as a team.” Looking at the squad, he added, “Anyone who claims there is a lack of quality here is lying.”
