Nayef Aguerd has broken his silence. After a return to Real Sociedad was considered in recent days, the Morocco international gave his version of events and dismissed suggestions that an issue had been detected during his medical.

In a statement posted on social media on Saturday, August 15, the Olympique de Marseille defender confirmed that he had considered returning to the Spanish club, where he played during the 2024-2025 season.

“I had the opportunity to consider a return to Real Sociedad, a club I have enormous respect and affection for,” the Atlas Lion said.

Aguerd said he had spoken with Real Sociedad’s coach about his physical condition, and particularly the program planned for his return to competition. The move was then put on hold while the two clubs continued their discussions.

The Moroccan defender stressed one point in particular: his medical was not the reason the move fell through.

“My medical went perfectly and was approved by both clubs. There was therefore no medical issue,” he said.

According to Aguerd, the disagreement instead concerned the timetable for his return. The player wanted to follow a gradual return-to-play protocol to regain full fitness, while Real Sociedad’s staff wanted to be able to count on him immediately.

“The only issue concerned this gradual return-to-play protocol, which was necessary to allow me to regain all my abilities under the best conditions, while the coach wanted to be able to count on me immediately. I fully respect his position,” he continued.

The Morocco international also rejected suggestions that his stance amounted to a refusal to join Real Sociedad or that he had made a personal demand.

“So it was neither a whim nor a lack of respect toward Real Sociedad or anyone else. It was simply a responsible decision to protect my body and allow me to have the full season that everyone wants,” he said.

His future, however, has not been decided. Aguerd acknowledged that Olympique de Marseille’s financial situation could still influence his future this summer and left the door open to a possible departure before the transfer window closes.

“I am aware of OM’s financial situation and I know that, in football, a lot can still happen between now and the end of the transfer window,” he said, before stressing that he would remain fully committed for as long as he remains a Marseille player.

“As long as I wear this shirt, I will give everything and fight for the club, my teammates and the supporters,” Nayef Aguerd concluded.
