Soulaiman El Samghouli strikes boxing gold for Morocco at Mediterranean Games

Boxer Soulaiman El Samghouli won the gold medal in the under-65 kg category Thursday, Aug. 27, in Taranto, Italy, as part of the Mediterranean Games.

The Moroccan boxer defeated Algeria’s Ismail Bakhsis in the final (3-2), capping a brilliant run at just 21 years old. He secured Morocco’s 12th gold medal in boxing in its history.

Earlier Thursday, Aug. 27, Saida Lahmidi won the gold medal in the under-70 kg category after French boxer Maëlys Richol withdrew from the final.

Widad Bertal, meanwhile, lost to Italy’s Sirine Charaabi in the final (4-1) in the under-54 kg category, also on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Moroccan boxing claimed three bronze medals. In the under-70 kg category, Abdelhak Nadir lost to Italy’s Gabriele Guidi Rontani (0-5).

Mounia Toutir, meanwhile, was defeated by Turkey’s Sema Çalışkan (1-4) in the under-65 kg category, while Yasmine Mouttaki’s run ended in the semifinals of the under-51 kg category after she lost to Spain’s Laura Fuertes Fernández (0-5).
