The city of Tangier is hosting the 2026 ITTF African Table Tennis Championships through October 25, with nearly 30 African countries taking part in a week of intense competition featuring high-level matchups and sporting exchanges among the continent’s top table tennis nations.

Organized by the Royal Moroccan Table Tennis Federation (FRMTT), the continental event is being held under the auspices of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), in coordination with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

The competition provides an opportunity to bring together the best of African table tennis and strengthen sporting exchanges among countries across the continent, while giving Moroccan players the chance to compete against high-level opponents.

Speaking on the occasion, FRMTT President Anas Ziati said hosting the continental event is part of the momentum currently driving national sport and demonstrates Morocco’s ability to organize international and African sporting competitions to high standards of professionalism, thanks to its sports and logistical infrastructure as well as its experience in organizing major events.

He also said the ambition for this Tangier edition goes beyond the sporting competition itself, with the aim of making the event a space for meetings and exchanges among African table tennis stakeholders, as well as a means of strengthening sports cooperation between the Kingdom and fellow African countries.

The event is also part of the federation’s new vision, which seeks to revitalize national table tennis by developing participation, strengthening training and expanding the sport’s player base, he said.

The initiative also aims to give Moroccan male and female players the opportunity to compete against the best African table tennis schools in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the national teams at the continental and international levels.

Ziati also noted that the participation of around 30 African countries demonstrates the importance of this edition in the sport’s continental calendar, particularly compared with the previous edition, held in Tunisia, which brought together 25 countries.

The FRMTT president also highlighted Morocco’s organizational experience in table tennis, particularly through the successful hosting of the Arab Championship, expressing the ambition to deliver a benchmark edition in Tangier in organizational, technical and media terms.

On the opening day, the Moroccan teams began their campaigns in the men’s and women’s team events, which are being held from October 18 to 20.

In the women’s competition, Morocco lost 3-0 to Tunisia in Group 3. In the men’s competition, Morocco recorded a 3-0 victory over Sudan before beating Angola by the same score in Group 4.

The Moroccan teams are therefore entering the competition with high ambitions, against the expected challenge from several leading African teams, notably Egypt and Nigeria.

In addition to the men’s and women’s team events, the championships also include men’s and women’s individual competitions, as well as men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The Moroccan players aim to achieve positive results, improve their continental rankings and strengthen their presence in international competitions.
