Morocco’s dream of a third consecutive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final ended in heartbreak Wednesday as Cameroon eliminated the Atlas Lionesses on penalties at Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

The defeat was particularly painful for Jorge Vilda’s side, which had the chance to secure a place in the final from the penalty spot in the closing moments of extra time, only to see the opportunity slip away.

Vilda fielded his strongest available lineup for the semifinal, notably restoring Ibtissam Jraidi at the head of the attack. The Moroccan striker, who started on the bench in the 2-1 quarterfinal victory over South Africa, returned to the starting XI against the Indomitable Lionesses.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with both teams cautious and well organized. Much of the contest unfolded in midfield, with neither side able to consistently break through the opposition’s defensive structure.

Morocco looked to create openings down the flanks but struggled to turn possession into clear chances in the final third.

The Atlas Lionesses emerged with greater attacking intent after the break. They pushed higher, increased the tempo and repeatedly sought openings on both wings, but Cameroon’s goalkeeper remained alert to the danger.

Vilda made several substitutions in an attempt to inject fresh energy and create new attacking options. Cameroon, meanwhile, remained willing to push forward when opportunities emerged, but could not find a breakthrough either.

With neither side able to score after 90 minutes, the semifinal went to extra time.

The penalty that could have changed everything

Then came Morocco’s golden opportunity.

In the dying moments of extra time, the Atlas Lionesses were awarded a penalty. With the shootout looming, Morocco suddenly had the chance to settle the semifinal and book its place in the final.

Fatima Tagnaout stepped up but failed to convert.

The miss sent the contest to penalties, where Cameroon proved far more clinical.

The Indomitable Lionesses won the shootout 3-1 to secure their place in the final and bring Morocco’s campaign to an abrupt end.

For the Atlas Lionesses, the disappointment is immense. Morocco had reached the final in each of the previous two editions and entered the tournament hoping for another opportunity to capture the first continental title in its history.

Instead, its run ends one match short, with Tagnaout’s late penalty likely to remain the defining moment of a semifinal decided by the narrowest of margins.
