Al Boura Beach: A peaceful summer retreat on Morocco’s southern coast

VideoMany families in Morocco’s southern regions choose to spend part of the summer at Al Boura Beach, about 9 kilometers north of Tarfaya. Known for its calm and peaceful atmosphere, the beach draws holidaymakers from Laayoune, Smara and other provinces, adding to the lively family atmosphere, particularly as it lies near the Donald Trump Expressway linking northern and southern Morocco via Laayoune.

Much of the beach’s appeal lies in the natural condition of its clean sands, preserved in part by its distance from urban development and noise. Families from nearby areas and beyond come here every year, often returning to the same spot to enjoy their holidays in a distinctly family-friendly setting.

Salek Chihab, a Tarfaya native and head of the Tarfaya branch of the Friends of the Ocean Association, praised the family atmosphere at the beach, noting that the area is also known for its sense of safety and security.

He said the beach and the tents set up there do not require security guards, thanks to the safe environment and the mutual trust among holidaymakers. Visitors continue to enjoy themselves into the evening and at night, taking part in various recreational activities, including group games such as cards, dominoes and siga.

Most of the tents are equipped with clean solar power, allowing holidaymakers to use refrigerators day and night. We observed this during a walk through the campsite, where blue, environmentally friendly solar panels were visible throughout the area.

Meanwhile, Hassana El Bekkay, a native of Laayoune, said he has preferred Al Boura Beach for years as a destination for his favorite pastime, fishing. He is joined by many other fishing enthusiasts who come with their children and families and share the different stages and experiences of fishing with a rod.

Drawing on his experience, El Bekkay listed several types of fish that anglers prefer to catch at the beach, whose calm surroundings and natural setting provide favorable conditions for recreational fishing.

Al Boura Beach appears to be establishing itself as an “eco-friendly” coastal destination, joining the many beaches in and around Laayoune. Its growing appeal could help expand the region’s tourism offering, particularly as the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region continues to develop and offers a range of attractions and conditions conducive to attracting visitors to its extensive coastline, alongside the many beaches found across Morocco’s regions.
