Tanjazz returns to Tangier from September 18 to 20 for its 23rd edition, bringing together major international names including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Buena Vista All Stars, Diego El Cigala and Rodrigo y Gabriela for three days of music at venues across the city.
The festival will once again bring together jazz, Latin music, flamenco and other musical styles, with concerts at the Palais des Institutions Italiennes and free performances in different parts of the city.
Since its launch in September 2000, Tanjazz has established itself as a major cultural event in Tangier by showcasing a wide range of musical styles. The festival brings together swing, soul, funk, boogie-woogie, flamenco, afrobeat, Cuban music and Gnaoua percussion. Its program combines ticketed concerts at the Palais des Institutions Italiennes with free musical performances as part of Tanjazz en Ville.
The Palais des Institutions Italiennes will be at the heart of the festival. On Friday, September 18, the Jardin Stage will feature American singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. At the same time, the Patio Stage will focus on blues, soul and funk with The Groovy Four, Gisele Jackson accompanied by The Brooklyn Souls and British group The Haggis Horns. Dance classes led by Rabat City Swing and the festival’s first jam session will also be part of the opening night.
Saturday, September 19 will begin with a masterclass by The Haggis Horns focusing on groove, brass and composition. The Jardin Stage will then welcome flamenco artist Diego El Cigala, who will celebrate the 20th anniversary of his album Lágrimas Negras, followed by Buena Vista All Stars, led by Barbarito Torres and Demetrio Muñiz. The Patio Stage will feature the swing of The Swing Shouters, Swiss pianist Ladyva’s boogie-woogie and the afrobeat of French group Les Frères Smith.
The Tanjazz en Ville performances will bring artists closer to audiences in public spaces across Tangier. The Belgian-Moroccan brass band Remork & Karkaba will open the program on Friday by combining brass instruments with Gnaoua percussion.
On Saturday, The Groovy Four will perform a blues swing concert around midday, followed by American trumpeter Ronald Baker and then The Haggis Horns.
On Sunday, September 20, pianist Ladyva and The Swing Shouters will bring the festival to a close in the streets of Tangier.
