The project is one of the region’s major water infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening water resources in the Souss region amid ongoing challenges related to water scarcity and prolonged drought.
Once the expansion is completed, the dam’s storage capacity will increase to 280 million cubic meters, helping secure drinking water supplies for the city of Taroudant and surrounding communities, while ensuring irrigation water for agricultural land, particularly in the El Guerdane area. The project will also help recharge the Souss aquifer and protect downstream areas from flooding.
Construction is expected to be completed in November 2026. The expanded dam will collect rainfall and runoff from Ouzioua river, further boosting water availability across the province.
Al Mokhtar Soussi Dam is being expanded using an embankment design with a concrete face. Once completed, it will stand 100 meters above its foundation, making it one of the region’s largest water infrastructure projects and contributing to Morocco’s water security and sustainable development efforts.
