Work to secure and upgrade the road linking Kenitra to Mehdia port is progressing at a steady pace. The project covers a stretch of road running alongside an unstable cliff overlooking the fishing port and aims to restore safe traffic conditions for road users as quickly as possible.
The project includes widening the roadway and reinforcing the cliff to stabilize the slope and provide lasting protection for the road infrastructure against the risk of landslides. With a total budget of 9 million dirhams, the works cover a stretch of approximately 600 meters.
Speaking to Le360, Mohamed, a resident of Kenitra, stressed the importance of the road, describing it as a strategic link between the city, Mehdia fishing port, and the seaside resort. “This road is essential for residents’ daily travel, but also for transporting goods from the port,” he said.
The project follows several incidents that have affected this section of the road. On December 29, 2022, a major landslide occurred on the secondary road linking Kenitra to Mehdia fishing port. Part of the cliff collapsed, sending large rocks onto the roadway and causing significant material damage, although no casualties were reported.
More recently, in May 2026, another partial collapse of the cliff overlooking the Mehdia corniche renewed concerns among local residents, underscoring the site’s geological vulnerability to erosion.
