Morocco becomes Norway’s top supplier of raspberries and blackberries

Morocco becomes Norway’s leading supplier of raspberries and blackberries.

Morocco has emerged as Norway’s leading supplier of fresh raspberries and blackberries, with record exports of 707 tons between July 2025 and June 2026, up 22% year on year. The performance pushed Moroccan berries’ share of Norwegian imports above 50% for the first time and allowed Morocco to overtake Portugal for the top spot.

Morocco consolidated its position as Norway’s leading supplier of fresh raspberries and blackberries, making a decisive breakthrough during the 2025-26 marketing season, according to data published by specialized website EastFruit. Norwegian imports of Moroccan berries have grown steadily over the past five years, nearly doubling during that period. For the first time, their share of total Norwegian imports exceeded 50%.

Between July 2025 and June 2026, Norway imported 707 tons of raspberries and blackberries from Morocco, worth more than 9.3 million euros. The volume was up 22% from the 2024-25 season and set a new record for Moroccan exports to the country. The performance is particularly notable because Norway’s overall berry imports declined over the same period.

The Norwegian market remains relatively small but attractive, according to the same source. Local raspberry production covers part of summer demand but remains constrained by the climate. Imports therefore play a key role in meeting demand during the rest of the year. Morocco’s export window runs from October to May, with peaks in demand during the winter and late spring.

While winter shipments posted moderate growth during the 2025-26 season, the decisive breakthrough came in May, when imports surged to a record 216 tons, more than double the volume recorded a year earlier.

May is traditionally a pivotal period, marking the transition between winter imports and the start of local Norwegian production. Morocco was able to make more effective use of this window than all of its competitors.

Morocco overtakes Portugal

Portugal and Morocco are the main suppliers of raspberries and blackberries to the Norwegian market, with smaller volumes coming from the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico and Poland. Spain’s role has weakened in recent years, while Portuguese exports fell sharply during the 2025-26 season, particularly toward the end of the year.

Portuguese shipments fell by nearly 27% compared with the 2024-25 season, leaving an opening that Moroccan exporters quickly filled. By the end of the season, Morocco had shipped 215 tons more than Portugal, reclaiming the top spot.

The 2025-26 season stands out as the most successful in the history of Moroccan berry exports to Norway, demonstrating the ability of Moroccan producers to adapt to market changes and seize opportunities when competitors weaken. Maintaining this leadership will nevertheless depend on Morocco’s performance during the critical December-January period, as well as its ability to reproduce similarly high volumes in May.

The success adds to Morocco’s broader expansion in Northern Europe, where the country has also doubled its exports of sweet peppers to Norway.
