A thriller written by a Moroccan novelist is rare enough to be worth highlighting. But when that same novel is being adapted in the United States, it becomes something unprecedented.
Moroccan author and screenwriter Abdelilah Hamdouchi is behind this achievement. The author of the first Arabic crime novel translated into English, he wrote this gripping psychological thriller, which “follows a young man wrongly accused of murdering his wealthy wife. As he struggles to prove his innocence, he finds himself caught in a web of systemic corruption, love and legal intrigue,” according to the synopsis.
First published in 2001, The Final Bet, which is set in Casablanca, is scheduled to be produced in 2027 by Hollywood Ventures Group, Canadian company Big Picture Cinema and Moroccan production company Pink Sheep, U.S. media outlet Variety reports.
“I am extremely proud to see The Final Bet move from the page to the screen,” Hamdouchi said in a statement. “A novel lives through language and imagination, while cinema gives its characters, tensions and story an entirely new dimension through images, acting and sound,” the Moroccan author added. “Seeing this Moroccan story come to life as a feature film is deeply meaningful to me, both personally and as a writer,” he concluded.

For his part, Variety reports that Glenn Gainor, co-founder of Hollywood Ventures Group, who is adapting the novel for the screen with Taha Benghalem, believes that “although it is a work of fiction, it evokes a period of profound legal and social upheaval in Morocco and raises questions of justice that transcend borders. We are extremely proud to have helped bring Abdelilah Hamdouchi’s story to the screen.”
Jayce Barreiro, president and head of production at Big Picture Cinema Group, echoed this view, saying: “What drew me to The Final Bet was not just the plot, but the way you can feel the tension and pressure of Casablanca on every page. That kind of precision is rare,” he added. “And that is precisely what makes a thriller stay with you, rather than simply leaving a fleeting impression.”
Glenn Gainor is adapting the novel for the screen with Taha Benghalem, who will also produce the film alongside Seloua El Gouni of Pink Sheep Productions and Nelly Kim of Hollywood Ventures Group.
