The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reaffirmed on Friday in New York their “consistent position in support of the Moroccan Sahara” and the “Moroccan autonomy initiative to resolve” the regional dispute over the Sahara.

Speaking on behalf of the GCC countries during a meeting of the UN Fourth Committee, Bahrain’s representative welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797, which “enshrines the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a decisive turning point toward a realistic, viable and lasting solution” to this artificial dispute.

The GCC countries also reiterated their support for UN-led efforts to reach a definitive solution to the dispute “with full respect for the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco and its territorial integrity,” the diplomat told members of the committee.
