Istiqlal has handed the reins of its parliamentary group to Madiha Khayir, replacing Allal Amraoui, while the PJD has settled its House leadership and put forward Abdellah Bouanou for deputy speaker.

Khayir returns to parliament after topping the September 23 poll in Beni Mellal with 21,384 votes. Her appointment was cleared by Istiqlal’s executive committee before party lawmakers endorsed her at a meeting chaired by Secretary-General Nizar Baraka in Rabat.

A member of the party’s executive committee, she served in the outgoing legislature and previously held the post of secretary-general of the Mohammed VI International Academy of Civil Aviation.

The PJD put its parliamentary posts to a secret ballot, with three contenders shortlisted for each position following applications and internal deliberations.

Idriss El Azami El Idrissi secured the parliamentary group leadership, while Bouanou got the party’s nod to contest the deputy speakership.

The selections were approved by the PJD’s general secretariat, headed by Abdelilah Benkirane, according to a statement issued on Thursday evening.

Bouanou will now be the party’s candidate for a place among the House’s deputy speakers as the new legislature prepares to constitute its governing bodies.
