The Central Commission was formally launched during a meeting at the Ministry of the Interior. At the same time, provincial election monitoring commissions began operating across the Kingdom, alongside regional commissions established to support them, the ministry said in a statement.
The provincial commissions are composed of the wali or governor, the King’s Public Prosecutor or the King’s Prosecutor, depending on the jurisdiction.
According to the ministry, the commissions’ primary mission is to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process by monitoring every stage of the legislative elections, from the current preparatory phase through voting day and the announcement of results.
They are also tasked with taking immediate action to address any issues that could undermine the integrity of the elections.
The ministry said the Central Commission and the provincial and regional commissions will carry out their duties in strict compliance with applicable laws and regulations, without prejudice to the powers and prerogatives conferred by law upon legislative, judicial, and administrative bodies.
As part of a participatory approach to managing the electoral process, the Central Commission will also meet with leaders of political parties whenever necessary to provide updates on preparations, hear their proposals and discuss any issues they raise regarding the various stages of the elections.
