The Republic of Ghana has welcomed the historic initiative launched by King Mohammed VI to implement the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said on Sunday in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
“We congratulate King Mohammed VI on this historic initiative. Ghana is truly proud to be an active member of this initiative within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),” the Ghanaian foreign minister told the press on the sidelines of the 69th session of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government.
Ablakwa said the gas pipeline has the potential to significantly boost African integration, stressing the importance of investing in infrastructure across the continent.
“If we want to industrialize our countries for the benefit of our people, we must invest in infrastructure,” he said.
The summit of heads of state and government of ECOWAS member countries hosted the signing on Sunday in Freetown, Sierra Leone, of the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) governing the development of the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) Nigeria-Morocco.
The energy infrastructure project, which will span nearly 6,800 kilometers, is designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco before connecting to the European gas network.
