Speaking on the Mexican television program Bety en Acción, Lebbar reiterated that Mexico’s recognition of the separatist entity is the principal point of disagreement. He described the issue as "the pebble in the shoe" of bilateral relations and voiced hope that Mexico would adjust its stance in line with recent resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council.
The ambassador stated that Morocco is working closely with its Mexican counterparts to encourage this shift, emphasizing that any change in Mexico’s position would unlock new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
Despite this political disagreement, Lebbar stressed that relations between the two countries are gaining momentum. He noted that Mexico is Morocco’s leading trading partner in the Arab world and its second-largest in Africa, evidenced by over 60 Mexican companies, including Bimbo, operating in Morocco.
New cultural projects
On the cultural front, Lebbar announced that Morocco is preparing a cooperation agreement with the state of Puebla to enhance exchanges between artisans from both countries. He said discussions are underway with the Ministry of Culture and local authorities in Puebla to formalize an agreement supporting joint projects, particularly in traditional ceramics.
The ambassador highlighted the similarities between Puebla’s Talavera pottery and Moroccan craftsmanship, especially the ceramics of Safi, describing both traditions as reflections of a shared heritage shaped by centuries of history.
Morocco aims to attract more Mexican tourists
Lebbar also highlighted the growth in tourism between the two countries, noting that Mexicans currently represent the largest source of visitors from Latin America to Morocco. Arrivals continue to increase, largely driven by word-of-mouth recommendations. However, he acknowledged that the absence of a direct flight remains a significant challenge to further expanding tourism flows.
The ambassador confirmed that Morocco will participate in several cultural events in Chapultepec and Mexico City’s Zócalo during the World Cup, aiming to showcase Moroccan culture, cuisine, and tourism to the Mexican public.
