Peru has announced plans to open a consulate in Dakhla, while expressing its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara.
Speaking Thursday in New York, Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá y Garcés Alvear expressed his country’s support for “the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over the Sahara,” as well as for “the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara, considering it a political, just, lasting and acceptable solution for all parties.”
The announcement came in a joint communiqué issued after talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita and his Peruvian counterpart on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The communiqué said Peru “expressed its willingness to open a Consulate in the city of Dakhla, which will serve as a platform for access to African markets for Peruvian products.”
It also noted Peru’s full support for “Resolution 2797, adopted by the United Nations Security Council in October 2025, which gave fresh impetus to the process of settling the dispute over the Sahara on the basis of the aforementioned Moroccan Initiative.”
