What does the Apache AH-64E add to Morocco’s military capabilities?

Close air support, anti-armor operations, reconnaissance, air defense and night missions are among the roles performed by the AH-64E Apache, which combines mobility, firepower and advanced systems on the battlefield.

The latest issue of L’Espace, the scientific magazine of the Royal Moroccan Air Force (FRA), describes the AH-64E Apache as a “weapon of initiative and urgency” within the Royal Armed Forces (FAR). This multi-role attack helicopter strengthens air-ground operations by providing direct air support. Its primary mission is to neutralize enemy armored vehicles, including tanks and mechanized vehicles, helping to “ensure tactical superiority” for forces engaged in operations.

Its high mobility allows it to quickly reach areas of engagement, while its sensors, communications systems and weapons give it the ability to detect and respond to threats in different operational environments. Its combination of mobility, firepower, and versatility allows it to provide support and maintain a strong presence where it is most needed.

The aircraft stands out for its vision, detection, and communications systems. Its thermal and electronic sensors can detect adversaries at long range. Its communications systems provide allied units with real-time information on the nature and movements of opposing forces.

The FRA magazine says, “this rapid warning and response capability gives tactical commanders a decisive initiative in the conduct of operations.”

Its mobility, firepower and ability to operate at night make it, according to the same source, “a flexible weapons system, perfectly suited to the operational requirements of the Royal Armed Forces.” It can be deployed in complex situations requiring rapid decisions, both as a maneuver unit and in a support role.

A multi-role platform on the battlefield

The AH-64E Apache provides close air support to ground troops with precision firepower, conducts anti-armor operations using Hellfire missiles, carries out reconnaissance missions while maintaining the ability to engage targets, and can contest air superiority against other helicopters or drones. It operates day and night, in all weather conditions, including hostile environments. The FRA magazine describes it as “an integrated air combat platform designed to dominate modern battlefields.”

Its reinforced structure and advanced protection systems enable it to withstand challenging battlefield conditions. Two turboshaft engines provide power and reliability. It boasts a maximum speed of 293 km/h, a range of 480 km without additional fuel tanks, and an operational ceiling of 6,400 meters. Its two-member crew, a pilot and a co-pilot/weapons systems operator, are seated in a modern cockpit equipped with multifunction touchscreen displays.

According to the FRA magazine, the acquisition of this aircraft also strengthens Morocco’s deterrence capabilities and national territory protection, allowing the country to “protect its territory and deter any potential threat.” Its advanced communication systems also ensure interoperability with allied forces, particularly US forces. It offers broad operational flexibility, targeting everything “from armored tanks to enemy drones.”

A second batch delivered at Cap Darâa

Seven of these aircraft joined the Royal Armed Forces during a ceremony held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Cap Darâa in the Tan-Tan region, ahead of the African Lion exercise. This delivery followed the arrival of the first batch of six AH-64E Apaches in March 2025.

These acquisitions stem from an intergovernmental agreement signed in June 2020 with the US Department of Defense for the delivery of a total of 24 AH-64E Apache helicopters.

With more than 1,300 aircraft in service and over 5.3 million flight hours, including 1.3 million in combat conditions, the AH-64E Apache forms the backbone of the US Army’s attack helicopter fleet and is also operated by a growing number of international defense forces.
