Rubbish is piling up across Aït Melloul, with residents complaining of overflowing bins and foul smells that have become difficult to escape in several neighborhoods.
Even the municipal council has not been spared. Waste has accumulated around its headquarters, a sight residents point to as evidence of how far the city’s sanitation problems have gone.
Across Aït Melloul, household waste can be seen spilling out around rubbish bins, some of which are badly damaged.
Residents and local associations say the condition of the bins has made matters worse. The equipment had required significant municipal spending, according to the information available to Le360, but deteriorated under everyday use.
The rubbish brings other problems with it.
Residents report growing numbers of flies and mosquitoes around collection points, as well as stray dogs and cats. Draught animals and people collecting discarded items are also regularly seen around the piles of waste.
Families living nearby fear the conditions could pose health problems, particularly for young children and people with chronic respiratory illnesses.

The situation has prompted calls for the supervisory authorities to intervene and for the municipality to find a more durable solution to waste collection.
There are also calls for better pay and working conditions for sanitation workers, whose jobs remain essential to keeping the city’s streets clean.
For now, the rubbish outside the municipal council headquarters has become one of the more visible signs of the problem residents encounter in their own neighborhoods.
