The State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries announced on Thursday, August 27, the lifting of the ban on harvesting and marketing clams collected in the Boutalha North 1 area, as well as oysters collected in the Boutalha North 2 and Boutalha areas, within the Dakhla maritime district.
“The Technical Committee responsible for monitoring the marine environment and shellfish examined the results of analyses carried out by the National Institute for Fisheries Research (INRH) in the areas concerned,” the State Secretariat said in a statement.
The results showed that the marine environment had stabilized and that oysters in the Boutalha North 2 and Boutalha areas, as well as clams in Boutalha North 1, had been fully purified, the same source said.
The State Secretariat also advised consumers to buy only packaged shellfish bearing official health identification labels and sold through authorized outlets, including official markets.
Shellfish sold by street vendors or in bulk offer no guarantee of safety and may pose a risk to public health, the State Secretariat warned.
