Teachers and education staff from Morocco’s 12 regional education academies are to receive training in artificial intelligence and robotics under a nationwide program launched in Rabat on Tuesday.

The program, organized by the Ministry of National Education in partnership with LOOP for Science & Technology and with support from the US Embassy, will train 30 education staff members at each stop, drawn from different levels of schooling.

The participants are expected to pass on what they learn to other teachers, according to Ilham Laaziz, the ministry’s director of educational and digital resources.

She said the training would help education staff keep pace with technological changes while bringing programming and robotics into classroom teaching alongside fundamental subjects.

The workshops will focus on practical tools that teachers can use to prepare lessons and examinations, said Imane Berchan, a founding member of LOOP for Science & Technology.

Teachers will also learn how to address questions about the safety of digital tools and use physical equipment and robots to help pupils understand how AI systems work and how algorithms are trained.

US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Benjamin Ziff described the program as a “bridge of innovation between the United States and Morocco.”

He said it would help teachers guide pupils towards the safe and responsible use of technology while preparing young people for future jobs.

The training caravan is scheduled to travel to other regions following its launch in Rabat, with workshops intended to help participants introduce the tools into their classrooms.
