The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased its annual financial support for member associations from $200,000 to $700,000, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced.

Speaking on Thursday at the CAF Strategic Conference in Santa Maria, on Cape Verde’s Sal Island, Patrice Motsepe said the increase had been implemented in 2021. The conference, which runs from October 7 to 9, is also attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Motsepe reaffirmed CAF’s goal of raising the annual support to $1 million per member association, notably by developing commercial partnerships and attracting new sponsors. He said CAF’s Executive Committee was due to review offers from shortlisted companies as part of efforts to secure partnerships that would increase resources for African football.

The CAF president also stressed the need for greater investment in academies, school football, amateur competitions and professional leagues. In the long term, the aim is for all 54 member associations to become financially self-sufficient through stronger cooperation with FIFA, governments and the private sector.

The CAF Strategic Conference is addressing the development of African football, improvements to its governance and the definition of priorities ahead of upcoming international competitions.

Friday’s program includes a session analyzing African teams’ performances at the 2026 World Cup, with FIFA Director of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger and several technical experts, including Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, taking part.
