Formula 1 will return to Africa in the early 2030s with a Grand Prix in Rwanda, the sport’s commercial rights holder, Formula 1, announced Tuesday, October 13.
The U.S.-based company said a 10-year agreement had been reached to bring the championship back to the continent, ending an absence of nearly four decades since the last African Grand Prix.
“Formula 1 is returning to Africa with a 10-year deal to race in Rwanda,” the organization said on its social media accounts. “The African Grand Prix is set to join the F1 calendar in the early 2030s.”
The last Formula 1 Grand Prix held on the African continent took place in 1993 at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa.
