Morocco finished second in the team event at the African Golf Championship, which concluded on Saturday in the Tunisian city of Hammamet, with South Africa claiming the title.
The Moroccan team, made up of Nizar Bourahim, Mohamed Bahamou, Reda El Hali and Youssef El Hali, finished with 628 strokes, just four behind the winning South African team’s total of 624. Zambia took third place with 646 strokes.
Morocco coach Brad Strack said he was pleased with the “excellent” performance produced by his players in the first and second rounds of the championship and at the start of the third and final round.
He expressed regret, however, that they were unable to maintain the same pace through the end of the competition.
“When you play at this excellent level and don’t finish the competition exactly as you should, you will naturally feel disappointed,” he said.
The American coach told Maghreb Arab Press that the team still had “some things to do to continue improving.”
“Our goal is to become genuine competitors in golf and to develop elite players ... The expectations are undoubtedly high, but we will do our very best,” he added.
The championship featured 68 players from 17 countries: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Réunion, South Africa, Seychelles, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
