A consortium involving Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is close to reaching an agreement to acquire a minority stake of about one-third in Liverpool, according to media reports on Monday, August 10.
The investment group includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and is led by Amit Bhatia, businessman and former shareholder of Queens Park Rangers.
Reports suggest that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owner, could announce the deal as early as this week, pending the completion of negotiations.
Last month, FSG acknowledged the consortium’s approach, confirming that discussions over outside investment were taking place.
“An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” an FSG spokesperson told Sky Sports.
The statement did not confirm that a deal had been agreed upon, and FSG has not commented publicly on the latest reports involving Bezos. However, the consortium’s interest has developed into negotiations that are reportedly close to conclusion.
The proposed investment would value Liverpool at around $5.9 billion, placing the club among the most highly valued football in the world. FSG, which bought Liverpool in 2010, is expected to retain overall control while bringing in a significant minority investor.
The potential transaction comes during a period of considerable change at Anfield. Despite heavy spending on new players, Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League last season, prompting the departure of manager Arne Slot and the appointment of former Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola.
Additionally, the club has undergone changes in leadership and playing staff. Michael Edwards left his role as FSG’s chief executive of football in July, and Mohamed Salah departed after several years as one of Liverpool’s leading players.
