A day after Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr and Ibrahima Konaté came under criticism over the way they wore the Ceuta T-shirts before the match against Elche, Real Madrid defended the principle of individual freedom for its players.
Spanish media widely circulated images of the three players. Unlike several of their teammates, Mbappé, Vinicius and Konaté wore their T-shirts in a way that left the inscriptions largely out of view.
Their decision quickly sparked comments and criticism in Spain, with some accusing them of failing to sufficiently display the messages printed on the shirts.
In response to the controversy, Real Madrid chose to defend its players and stress that personal choice must be respected when it comes to messages they are asked to publicly endorse.
“Real Madrid respects the opinion and sensitivity of each of its employees. No one can be forced to do something they do not think or believe in,” the club said in a statement carried by the Spanish press.
Real Madrid’s statement does not attempt to justify how Mbappé, Vinicius and Konaté chose to wear their shirts. Instead, the club is making clear that its players should not be expected to publicly display a message they do not personally support.
The inscriptions on the T-shirts are far from neutral, particularly given the political context surrounding Ceuta. The shirts featured messages including “Todos somos caballas,” or “We are all Caballas,” the traditional nickname for the inhabitants of Ceuta, as well as “Ceuta (y sus caballeros) es de la mar,” which can be translated as “Ceuta (and its knights) belongs to the sea.”

In this context, these slogans go beyond a simple expression of solidarity and inevitably carry a political meaning.
The precedent set by Abdessamad Ezzalzouli adds another dimension to Real Madrid’s position.
The previous day, the Moroccan international wearing the Betis shirt had worn a T-shirt carrying the same messages before the match against Villarreal.
Ezzalzouli then spoke out, insisting that the T-shirt had “at no point” been used for political purposes and that, in his view, it conveyed a “social” message.
However, his explanation leaves unanswered the question of whether he could have truly been unaware of the meaning of inscriptions explicitly referring to Ceuta.

The Atlas Lion did not suggest that he had worn the T-shirt by mistake or that he was unaware of its message. His statement instead made clear that he had knowingly worn it, while viewing the inscriptions as nothing more than a social message.
He also stopped short of an apology, choosing instead to reaffirm his attachment to Morocco and reject any political interpretation of his gesture.
This is precisely where the contrast with Mbappé, Vinicius and Konaté becomes striking. The three Real Madrid players also wore the T-shirt, but without clearly displaying its inscriptions.
When their decision began to draw scrutiny, their club immediately stressed that no player could be forced to openly display something they do not think or believe in.
