Sofiane Al Assabi wins Morocco’s first gold medal at Mediterranean Games

Morocco’s Sofiane Al Assabi won the country’s first gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto on Sunday, taking the men’s over-80kg taekwondo title with a 2-0 victory over Croatia’s Ivan Sabina.

Al Assabi claimed the title after defeating Croatia’s Ivan Sabina 2-0 in the final.

The Moroccan had secured his place in the final with another 2-0 victory over Spain’s Ivan Garcia Martinez in the semifinals.

Earlier in the day, Haitham Zahouti won silver in the under-80kg category, while Nada Laaraj claimed bronze in the under-67kg category.

On Saturday, Amina Dahhaoui also won silver in the under-57kg category.
