Wydad Athletic Club have appointed Portuguese coach Paulo Sérgio as head coach for the 2026-27 season, the club announced on Saturday July 25, entrusting the 58-year-old with leading a new chapter in its sporting project.
In a statement, Wydad said the appointment is part of its ambition to “open a new sporting chapter based on technical stability, a clear vision and enhanced competitiveness,” in line with the club’s history and ambitions.
Wydad will hope Paulo Sérgio’s arrival marks the beginning of a return to winning ways, as the Moroccan giants seek to bounce back from a difficult period and re-establish themselves among the leading forces in both the Botola Pro and continental football.
Born on February 19, 1968, in Estremoz, Portugal, Paulo Sérgio began his playing career as a striker, representing Belenenses, Paços de Ferreira, Salgueiros, Vitória Setúbal and Olhanense before moving into coaching in 2003.
The Portuguese tactician has since built an extensive managerial career across Europe and Asia. He has managed Sporting CP and Vitória Guimarães in Portugal, Heart of Midlothian in Scotland, where he guided the club to the 2011-12 Scottish Cup title, CFR Cluj in Romania and APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus.
He later coached Dibba Al-Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, Sanat Naft in Iran, Al-Taawoun in Saudi Arabia, Portimonense in Portugal between 2020 and 2024, before taking charge of Saudi Arabian side Al-Okhdood, where he remained until earlier this year.
