A new bipartisan bill introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressmen Ronny Jackson and Josh Gottheimer, already backed by six key lawmakers, calls for the Polisario Front to be designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) because of its ties to Iran. Supported by both Republicans and Democrats, the initiative reinforces the legislative efforts already spearheaded by Joe Wilson in the House and Ted Cruz in the Senate. This growing political and legal pressure in Washington comes at a critical moment, as the Tindouf militia continues to reject any form of negotiation.

In this interview, French Member of the European Parliament Céline Imart (The Republicans) discusses the initiative she has brought before the European Commission and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas. The initiative focuses on two issues: assessing whether the Polisario Front meets the European Union’s legal criteria for designation as a terrorist organization, and ensuring full traceability of European Union humanitarian aid allocated to the Tindouf camps to prevent its diversion.

After yielding to mounting pressure and rejoining the negotiation process based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, the Polisario Front is now attempting a last-ditch obstruction. Gripped by fears of its own dissolution, acting under the directives of an increasingly cornered Algerian patron and facing the prospect of being designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. Congress, the Tindouf-based militia is sinking ever deeper into a political deadlock with no apparent exit.
