Morocco’s economic capital scored 47.2 out of 100, ahead of Rabat, which ranked 445th globally. The other Moroccan cities included in the index were Tangier at 622nd, Agadir at 629th, Fez at 655th, Marrakech at 671st and Meknes at 708th.

Oxford Economics’ 2026 index covers 1,000 major cities worldwide and evaluates them across five main categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance.

The methodology gives the economic category a 30% weighting, while human capital and quality of life each account for 25%. Environment and governance each carry a 10% weighting.

Casablanca’s strongest performance came in human capital, where it ranked 229th globally, the best result recorded by a Moroccan city in this category in the 2026 edition.

The city ranked 384th in the economic category, 593rd in quality of life and 274th in environment.

The results highlight Casablanca’s economic and professional profile, supported by its position as Morocco’s largest economic and financial hub. At the same time, the index shows differences between the categories used to assess cities, meaning that the overall ranking reflects a combination of factors rather than economic performance alone.

Morocco’s other cities showed different areas of strength. Rabat, the country’s second-highest-ranked city and 445th globally, performed particularly well in the environment category, ranking 144th worldwide.

Tangier ranked 143rd in environment, the highest environmental ranking among the seven Moroccan cities included in the index.

Different strengths across Moroccan cities

Tangier ranked 622nd overall, followed by Agadir at 629th, Fez at 655th, Marrakech at 671st and Meknes at 708th.

The results point to significant differences in the strengths of Morocco’s cities across economic performance, human capital, quality of life and environmental conditions.

All seven Moroccan cities received the same ranking in governance: 615th worldwide.

This is linked to the index’s methodology, which uses indicators measured at the national level for the governance category. Cities within the same country therefore receive the same score for this component.

Oxford Economics said the index does not simply measure cities’ current conditions. It also incorporates economic forecasts and seeks to identify strengths and structural challenges that could affect their future trajectory.

The 2026 edition covers 1,000 cities across 163 countries.
