Marsa Maroc has entered the ranks of “regional port operators” in Drewry’s latest global review of the container terminal business while holding on to fourth place among Africa’s biggest operators for a third year running.
The new classification comes in Drewry’s 2025 Global Container Terminal Operators report, which also lists Marsa Maroc among its “leading operators and investors.”
Drewry said the Moroccan group was brought into the regional operators category after it managed to “secure investments in international terminals from 2024 onward.”

At home, its container terminals at Tanger Med, Casablanca and Agadir handled more than 3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) between them for the first time in 2025.
That performance has kept Marsa Maroc fourth among Africa’s container terminal operators, where it has now held the same position for three consecutive years.
More capacity is meanwhile being lined up at Nador West Med, where Marsa Maroc is preparing to operate two container transshipment terminals.
The two facilities will have combined capacity exceeding 5 million TEUs, considerably more than the traffic handled last year by the group’s three existing container terminals at Tanger Med, Casablanca and Agadir.
The additional capacity comes as Marsa Maroc builds up its transshipment business, with Nador West Med set to give the operator another base for containers moving between shipping routes through the Mediterranean.
For Drewry, however, the change in status has already come before those terminals enter service. Its 2025 report points to the international terminal investments secured by Marsa Maroc since 2024 in moving the group into the regional operator category, while its African ranking remains unchanged at fourth.
