Morocco remained Spain’s leading non-European Union supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables during the first four months of 2026, as imports from third countries continued to drive growth in the Spanish market, according to data released by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants (FEPEX).
FEPEX, citing data from Spain’s Department of Customs and Special Taxes, said Spain imported 1.7 million tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables worth €2.095 billion between January and April 2026. Compared with the same period in 2025, import volumes increased by 6%, while their value rose by 4%.
Imports from countries outside the European Union accounted for much of that growth. According to FEPEX, Spain imported 917,307 tonnes of fresh produce from third countries, up 7% year-on-year, with their value increasing 9% to €1.518 billion.
As a result, non-EU countries accounted for 72% of the total value of Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable imports during the first four months of the year, compared with 28% for EU member states. In terms of volume, imports from outside the EU represented 52% of the total, compared with 48% from within the bloc.
By contrast, imports from European Union countries followed a more moderate trend. Spain imported 837,267 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables from EU member states, an increase of 5.3% from a year earlier, while their value declined 6% to €577 million.
Among individual supplier countries, Morocco remained the largest non-EU supplier by value, with exports to Spain reaching €710 million, a 5.6% increase compared with the same period in 2025.
Morocco also ranked as Spain’s second-largest supplier by volume, exporting 232,993 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables during the period. France remained the largest supplier overall with 494,547 tonnes, followed by Morocco, Costa Rica (141,019 tonnes), the Netherlands (105,065 tonnes) and Peru (94,236 tonnes).
In terms of import value, Peru ranked second among non-EU suppliers with €183 million, followed by Costa Rica (€113 million) and Brazil (€87 million). FEPEX noted that Brazil recorded one of the strongest increases, with the value of its exports to Spain rising 17.5% year-on-year.
According to FEPEX, the figures show that the increase in Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable imports during the first four months of 2026 was mainly driven by purchases from third countries, whose share of the Spanish import market continues to grow.
