Royal Air Maroc to become Africa’s first airline to offer Starlink Wi-Fi

Royal Air Maroc will progressively equip 41 aircraft with Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi starting in early 2027.

Royal Air Maroc will progressively equip 41 of its aircraft with Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi starting in the first quarter of 2027, the national carrier announced Wednesday, October 7.

The service will be offered free of charge to members of the Safar Flyer loyalty program. Passengers will be able to access high-speed internet during their flights for streaming, communication, work and real-time connectivity, the airline said in a statement.

With the partnership, Royal Air Maroc says it will become the first African airline to offer Starlink on board its aircraft. The service relies on the satellite constellation developed by SpaceX and is designed to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity throughout the flight.

The rollout will be phased to maintain operational continuity. The first installations are scheduled for early 2027, followed by a gradual expansion across the 41 aircraft.

For Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou, the move is part of the carrier’s wider transformation.

“By choosing the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky, we are taking a decisive step in transforming our customer experience,” Addou said, adding that the upgrade accompanies a multi-year plan that includes fleet renewal and cabin redesign.

A new standard for passengers

The service is intended to address changing passenger expectations, particularly among business travelers, Moroccans living abroad, students and tourists, for whom staying connected during several hours of flight is increasingly important to the onboard experience.

Starlink can support uses that remain difficult with traditional in-flight connectivity systems, including video streaming and real-time communications. Royal Air Maroc plans to make connectivity part of a gradually upgraded passenger experience both on the ground and in the air.

Lauren Dreyer, Starlink’s vice president of commercial operations, described the agreement as an important step for African aviation. Royal Air Maroc will give its passengers access to technology already being used by several airlines in other markets.

The Starlink deal comes as Royal Air Maroc continues to expand and renew its fleet under its development plan. The carrier surpassed 70 aircraft at the end of September, up from a fleet of around 50 aircraft in 2021.

With 41 aircraft eventually equipped with Starlink, Royal Air Maroc aims to make connectivity a defining feature of its new onboard experience as African aviation moves toward higher service standards.
