A video circulated on social media as showing election campaign violence in Béni Mellal is actually five years old, police said on Saturday.
The footage, which shows violence on a public road, was shared on Saturday morning with claims that a young man had been attacked by people taking part in an election campaign in the city.
Béni Mellal police said checks found that the video had already been carried by several media outlets in September 2021.
Police also found no complaint, report or telephone call concerning an incident matching the claims accompanying the video.
The footage had therefore been recirculated out of its original context and falsely presented as a recent incident, police said.
