The plan has now been referred to the Urban Agency for its opinion and includes a provision for the expropriation of the land occupied by the market.
Abdessadeq Mershed, head of the Derb Ghallef district, told Le360 that the development plan has been signed, approved and reviewed by the central committee. Once it is published in the Official Gazette, the expropriation proposal can be placed on the council’s agenda.
Mershed said the price of the property has not yet been determined. That decision falls to the Interior Ministry’s planning and urban development committee, which brings together representatives of the relevant authorities. He said figures currently circulating about the price are inaccurate.

Abdelmounim Medker, head of the Derb Ghallef Souk Al Salam traders’ association, said the expropriation proposal was first put before the city council during its May session. A vote was postponed because the planning documents had not been completed.
Medker said the file has since returned to the Urban Agency pending official publication of the development plan. He added that the expropriation proposal will be brought back before the council at the next available session once the plan is published.
