Heatwave, thunderstorms expected across several Moroccan provinces through Sunday

A heatwave, hot weather and thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts are expected through Sunday in several provinces across the Kingdom, according to Morocco’s Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM).

In an orange-level weather alert, the DGM said temperatures ranging between 45°C and 47°C are forecast from Friday to Sunday in the provinces of Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Taroudant, Tata and Zagora.

During the same period, temperatures are expected to reach 42°C to 45°C in the provinces of Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Beni Mellal, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Marrakech, Rehamna, Youssoufia, Khénifra, Taounate, Ouezzane, Meknès, Fès, Moulay Yacoub, Sidi Kacem, Khouribga, Settat, Chichaoua, Khémisset, Guercif, Taza, Laâyoune, Tarfaya, Guelmim, and Tan-Tan. Over the same period, temperatures in the provinces of Essaouira and Safi are expected to range between 39°C and 42°C.

Hot weather is also forecast on Friday and Saturday, with temperatures of 40°C to 45°C in the provinces of Sidi Slimane, Benslimane, Chtouka-Aït Baha, Sidi Bennour, Berrechid and Kénitra, while temperatures between 39°C and 42°C are expected in Tiznit, Sidi Ifni, Inzegane-Aït Melloul and El Jadida.

The DGM also forecasts thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts on Friday, from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., affecting the provinces of Aousserd and Oued Ed-Dahab, with rainfall totals of 40 to 50 mm. From 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., thunderstorms are also expected in the provinces of Boulemane, Guercif and Figuig, with rainfall amounts ranging from 20 to 30 mm.
