Vehicles that will be driven abroad will have to comply with the Vienna Convention, which sets international rules for license plates, according to the National Road Safety Agency. The new plates, which will combine Arabic and Latin letters, will also have to display the “MA” country code, corresponding to the initials of the Kingdom of Morocco.

The measure is intended to modernize the national vehicle registration system and update administrative procedures in Morocco’s transport sector.

Owners of vehicles already on the road will be allowed to keep their current license plates, which will remain valid until the vehicle’s ownership is first transferred. The reform will also apply to mopeds, as well as light motorized three-wheelers and four-wheelers.

All of these new registration measures, applicable to all vehicles and motorized two-wheelers, will take effect nationwide on January 1, 2027.
