Built in 1928 near the historic Lahboul Garden, the century-old facility remains one of the main sports and leisure venues in the Ismaili capital. True to its social mission, it came back to life after reopening on July 4, marking the start of the 2026 summer season.
The pool has been packed with visitors, as families, children and young people fill the swimming and leisure areas in a lively and welcoming atmosphere. For many, it offers a much-needed escape from the intense heat.
Several visitors interviewed said the municipal pool remains the main summer destination for a large segment of the population because of its affordable prices. They pointed to its family-friendly atmosphere and swimming conditions, which stand in contrast to the higher prices charged by many private pools.
Many users also praised the cleanliness and safety standards. The water is renewed daily, the facilities are regularly maintained, and a medical station equipped for first aid is available on site, helping create a sense of security that encourages families to return throughout the summer.
According to Abderrahim Attil, director of the Meknes municipal pool, the venue holds special significance because of its history and the attachment it inspires across generations. He noted that every period of extreme heat brings a sharp increase in attendance, helped by admission fees that have deliberately been kept affordable.
Abdelkrim Rifaï, head of public swimming pools in Meknes, explained that this year’s delayed opening was due to maintenance work that coincided with the end of the school year. A technical committee supervised a broad renovation program that included upgrades to the facilities, stronger safety measures and coordination with Civil Protection services and local authorities.
The figures from last summer illustrate the importance of the facility. In the summer of 2025, the municipal pool generated revenues of 499,300 dirhams, highlighting the enduring appeal of this landmark venue and its important social role in the city.
