Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona meet on Tuesday, October 20, in one of the biggest fixtures of the early Champions League season, with Ousmane Dembélé’s side facing Lamine Yamal’s Catalans at the top end of the league-phase standings.

PSG are charging towards a historic Champions League treble after last week’s thrilling 4-2 win over Manchester City. They now face a Barcelona side in formidable attacking form and riding high after two months of strong performances.

Barcelona have averaged 4.3 goals per game across their 11 matches this season in all competitions, scoring 48 times.

As last season, the first major European nights have brought together two leading contenders for the trophy. Their circumstances, however, are quite different this time around.

At the same stage last year, PSG were dealing with a string of injuries and the absences of key players Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos.

Despite those setbacks, the Paris club snatched a 2-1 win in Barcelona thanks to its substitutes and academy graduates. Ferran Torres scored for the Catalans that night.

PSG have since signed the Spanish forward, and their stars are now in good form. The exception is Kvaratskhelia, who has struggled to find his best level recently but often shines in big matches.

Who will mark Lamine Yamal?

Nuno Mendes will miss Tuesday’s match after suffering a thigh injury, leaving PSG without the Portuguese left-back who has regularly managed to contain Yamal’s bursts of pace, including for an hour in this summer’s World Cup semifinal.

Luis Enrique must now choose between Lucas Digne, Lucas Hernandez and midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery, who filled in for the suspended Mendes earlier this season.

Maghnes Akliouche, who picked up an ankle knock against Strasbourg on Saturday, trained normally on Monday morning.

Despite the important absence of Nuno Mendes, PSG welcome Barcelona to the Parc des Princes in confident mood and with almost their full squad available, determined to show they remain at the top of European football.

Although their main aim will be to hit their peak next spring, PSG already delivered a standout first half against Manchester City last Wednesday, combining exceptional technical quality with an aggressive pressing game across the pitch.

Things have also improved in the league. After a shaky start and significant squad rotation, PSG have climbed back into the upper reaches of the Ligue 1 table, alongside Lyon and four other clubs.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are flying. The reigning two-time Spanish champions are the only team in Europe still unbeaten and the only side to have won every match they have played. It is already the best start to a season in the club’s history.

Hansi Flick’s men continue to impress with their attacking football and have quickly moved on from the failed move for Julian Alvarez and the departures of Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski. Raphinha has been particularly influential since moving into the centre-forward role, scoring 14 goals.

After being hampered by a muscle injury last year during Barcelona’s Champions League campaign against PSG and the 2026 World Cup, Yamal has returned to his best. The Spanish world champion has scored nine goals and provided 10 assists, while producing moments of skill that have captured attention around the world.

Spanish World Cup winner Rodri, who joined Barcelona this summer after being linked with Real Madrid, described the clash with PSG as a “good test” against “the best team in Europe” to gauge the Catalan giants’ true level. Barcelona have so far had few tests against top opposition, with Betis, Galatasaray and Sevilla FC among the strongest sides they have faced.

Barcelona will nevertheless be without injured defenders Eric Garcia and Jules Koundé on Tuesday. Joao Cancelo is expected to start at right-back.

At the Parc des Princes, the attacking talent on both sides will be expected to deliver a spectacle, without the pressure of the standings or the knockout matches that come in the spring.
