England vs. DR Congo: A tougher test than it appears

England, chasing a first World Cup title since their lone triumph 60 years ago, will face DR Congo, who have reached this stage of the tournament for the first time. The Three Lions advanced from the group stage with two wins and a draw, while the Leopards also had an impressive campaign.

Back at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, DR Congo finished third in Group K after drawing 1-1 with Portugal, losing 1-0 to Colombia and beating Uzbekistan 3-1. They now confront one of the tournament favorites but are expected to put up their trademark fighting display.

Several Congolese defenders are familiar with English football. Axel Tuanzebe was born in England, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka moved there at the age of four. Additionally, Arthur Masuaku, who played for West Ham between 2016 and 2022 and Sunderland in 2025, and Chancel Mbemba, a Newcastle player from 2015 to 2018, are well-acquainted with the English game.

Belgium vs. Senegal: All to play for

Africa Cup of Nations runners-up Senegal endured a difficult start to the tournament, losing to France (3-1) and Norway (3-2) before securing a hard-fought place in the knockout stage. Their struggles in front of goal raised questions, although Sadio Mané’s teammates responded with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq. Belgium, however, present a far greater challenge.

The Red Devils, on the other hand, arrive full of confidence after topping Group G. They were held to draws by Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0) before showcasing their attacking quality in a convincing 5-1 win over New Zealand. Even so, Rudi Garcia’s side continue to face questions over their attacking efficiency.

With both teams capable of producing brilliant performances as well as disappointing displays, this contest promises to be one of the most unpredictable of the round.

United States vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina: Hosts take on the outsiders

The United States will look to make home advantage count against a Bosnia and Herzegovina side hoping to seize any opportunity to spring an upset.

The hosts finished top of their group after beating Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0 despite suffering a 3-2 defeat to Türkiye. Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Canada, lost 4-1 to Switzerland, and defeated Qatar 3-1 to reach the knockout stage.

Wednesday’s schedule (Moroccan time):

England vs. DR Congo — 5 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Belgium vs. Senegal — 9 p.m. at Lumen Field in Seattle.

United States vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina — 1 a.m. on Thursday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
