Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister of Economy and Finance and Public Performance, defended tax increases targeting certain luxury goods and products under the 2027 Finance Bill (PLF 2027) during an appearance on 2M’s “Saât Assaraha” program on Wednesday, October 28. He did not rule out further increases in registration duties on luxury cars if their numbers continue to grow at the current rate.
“We have increased registration duties on luxury cars,” the minister recalled, arguing that this category of vehicles still offers room for further taxation. “I am convinced that if the number of luxury cars continues to increase at the current rate, there is still room to raise these duties,” he said.
Lekjaa, however, sought to reassure property owners. “We have changed neither registration duties nor land registry fees,” he stressed. The minister also said that citizens who own older properties that have remained unregistered for a long time are now being encouraged to regularize their situation.
Other tax measures discussed include higher taxes on cigarettes, particularly electronic cigarettes, as well as luxury alcoholic beverages. Regarding e-cigarettes, Lekjaa emphasized the goal of protecting young people, especially around schools. In his view, price levels can help limit their accessibility.
The 2027 Finance Bill also provides for an increase in corporate income tax for major operators in the hydrocarbons sector whose net profits reach at least MAD 100 million. The measure targets the sector’s most profitable companies, as the government seeks to generate more tax revenue from certain business activities and categories of consumption.
