Hassan II Avenue redevelopment: Upgrading a major road
The redevelopment of Hassan II Avenue is one of the city’s main planned urban projects. Work on the first phase has been launched with a budget of more than 26 million dirhams, with the aim of upgrading the road, improving traffic flow and enhancing the appearance of the urban area.
The project follows consultations held by the Smara municipal council with café and shop owners operating along the avenue. The meetings presented the redevelopment plans and gathered proposals from business owners, particularly regarding the organization of spaces, improvements to shopfronts and the use of public property, with the aim of ensuring that the project meets the needs of the various stakeholders.

The project also includes road and sidewalk upgrades, signage, street lighting and green spaces, as part of an overall plan to improve the quality of the road and the conditions for those using it.
Tender documents also show that the Hassan II Avenue redevelopment program includes work on street lighting, signage, road infrastructure and urban development, confirming the comprehensive nature of the project.
11-hectare industrial activity zone
Alongside the urban upgrades, the city’s economic development is also being supported by a major project to establish an industrial activity zone north of Smara, covering approximately 11 hectares at a cost of 52 million dirhams.
The project aims to provide an organized and fully equipped space for production and investment activities, which could help diversify the local economy and create more favorable conditions for investors and entrepreneurs.
The zone is particularly important given the need for structured economic areas that bring industrial and production activities together within an organized framework. This would help improve the distribution of activities across the urban area and make the city more attractive to investors.
A vision combining urban renewal and economic development
The redevelopment of Hassan II Avenue and the creation of the industrial activity zone are part of a broader package of projects carried out in Smara in 2026. These have also included upgrading underserved neighborhoods, expanding street lighting and redeveloping roads and public spaces.
