Portugal-Spain: A clash of generations
Spain, led by 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in one of the standout ties of the round of 16.
The match carries added significance after the five-time Ballon d’Or winner announced that this tournament will mark his final appearance for Portugal. It also brings Ronaldo back against a familiar opponent, having enjoyed the most successful spell of his club career at Real Madrid, where he won four UEFA Champions League titles and became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 450 goals.
Now 41, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations. He has scored three goals in four matches at this World Cup, underlining the determination and hunger that have defined his career.
Spain, meanwhile, will look to teenage star Lamine Yamal, who won UEFA Euro 2024 at just 17 years old. The Barcelona winger entered the tournament while still recovering from a thigh injury that sidelined him for the end of the club season. Speaking at Saturday’s press conference, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Yamal’s mentality and ability to thrive under pressure.

USA-Belgium: A match already surrounded by controversy
Belgium and the United States will meet for the first time in 12 years, having last faced each other in the 2014 FIFA World Cup round of 16, when the Red Devils won 2-1 thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
After topping their group with six points, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be able to count on Folarin Balogun, whose suspension following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 was lifted by FIFA amid widespread criticism and questions over the decision.
Balogun has scored three of the United States’ 10 goals at this tournament, matching Landon Donovan’s tally as the country’s second-highest scorer in a single World Cup, behind only Bert Patenaude, who netted four times in 1930.
Belgium, meanwhile, heads into the match full of confidence after its remarkable comeback against Senegal. Trailing 2-0 in the 85th minute, the Red Devils fought back to secure a 3-2 extra-time victory thanks to a Youri Tielemans brace and a Romelu Lukaku winner.
While Belgium is yet to play a match in the United States during this World Cup, the Americans have won three of their four home matches and have looked defensively solid throughout the tournament.
