Police have arrested a man suspected of posing as a Royal Gendarmerie officer to defraud several people, including by involving members of his family in marriage proposals to make his assumed identity more convincing.

The man was arrested on Tuesday, September 1, after an investigation into allegations that he had deliberately presented himself as a gendarme, according to a security source.

Clothing believed to be linked to the Royal Gendarmerie uniform was found during the investigation. Police suspect he used it to make his claims more credible.

Preliminary findings indicate that the man obtained money from some of his alleged victims.

Investigators also suspect he brought members of his family into marriage proposals made to women, helping him pose as a gendarme and gain their trust.

Police are now seeking to establish how many people may have been defrauded, identify the acts allegedly committed and determine whether anyone else was involved.
