Police in Fes arrested a 34-year-old man on Friday after videos circulated online warning residents not to go out at night because of a supposed spate of violent robberies.

In the videos, the man claimed a motorcyclist and an accomplice were carrying out “brutal” robberies in several neighborhoods of the city.

Police said checks carried out after the videos began circulating found no complaints or reports of crimes matching his account.

Investigators subsequently identified and arrested the man, with police saying that the incidents described in the videos had not taken place.

He is suspected of reporting crimes he knew had not occurred and spreading false information liable to undermine the public’s sense of security.

The man has been placed under judicial investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.
