Liam Lawson will remain with Red Bull for the Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for September 11–13 in Madrid, as Isack Hadjar is not yet ready to return from the wrist injury he sustained during the summer break.
Red Bull confirmed on Monday, September 7, that Lawson will continue alongside Max Verstappen at the team’s first race at the new Madring circuit. The New Zealander initially replaced Hadjar at the Dutch Grand Prix before keeping his seat at Monza last weekend.
“After racing for the team in Zandvoort and Monza, Liam will continue to drive alongside Max at this week’s Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid,” Red Bull said in a statement.
Hadjar injured his wrist while training during the summer break and has now missed three consecutive race weekends. Red Bull said his recovery is progressing positively, but he is not yet ready to return to the cockpit. The Frenchman will travel to Madrid to support the team.
The injury is a major setback for Hadjar, who has enjoyed a consistent season so far. The French driver currently sits eighth in the championship with 71 points and has regularly finished inside the top 10, including a podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Lawson had been enjoying a strong run of results with Racing Bulls before replacing Hadjar, scoring points in several races and showing good consistency.
Since stepping up to Red Bull, he finished seventh at Zandvoort before taking 14th at Monza. His continued stay with the senior team gives him another opportunity to build on his performances alongside Verstappen.
Yuki Tsunoda, meanwhile, will remain with Red Bull’s sister team Racing Bulls alongside Arvid Lindblad. Tsunoda finished 11th at Zandvoort and 10th at Monza since returning to the team.
